The concept of silver-working is as unique as it is fascinating it took me a while to properly understand it, but by the time Robin said "Míngbai" the second time around, I had figured it out. Robin Swift is a well-developed character who anyone would root for, and his long-held beliefs changed tentatively enough to be convincing. With that preface aside, I will begin with the good: Babel is a gripping read that isn't at all easy to put down. Her extensive research and distinct viewpoint have gone into the writing of every page and the creation of every character it is impossible to review the book without also commenting on its author's motivations-or at least as much of those as carried across. By writing something so personal under the guise of something as commercial as the genre of historical fantasy, Kuang runs the risk of having the critique of her book turn into a critique of her. Kuang said of her latest release that it was "a love letter and breakup letter to Oxford." It deals with what she learned through the course of her studies-including the nature of the white academy, and how its promoted knowledge begot and was begotten by imperialism-and presents it in the format of fiction set in the very university Kuang speaks about and against.
